Do you actually need the rental company's insurance?
This is the single biggest upsell at the counter, and the honest answer is: check your existing coverage first. Three things may already protect you.
- Your personal auto policy. Most US policies extend comprehensive and collision coverage to a rental car used for leisure in the US. Call your insurer and ask specifically about rental vehicles — and about liability limits, which is where gaps usually appear.
- Your credit card. Many cards include collision damage coverage when the full rental is charged to that card and you decline the counter waiver. Most are secondary (they pay after your auto insurance); some premium travel cards are primary, which is genuinely valuable because it avoids a claim on your own policy.
- A standalone travel insurance policy, if you already bought one for the trip.
When buying at the counter does make sense
- You do not own a car and therefore have no personal auto policy.
- You are renting outside the United States, where card and policy coverage often does not extend.
- You are renting a vehicle class your card excludes — many exclude large vans, exotic and luxury vehicles.
- You want to avoid any possibility of a claim touching your own insurance record.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reserve a rental car with Fareobuzz?
Call 1-888-620-4018 with your pickup city or airport, pickup and return dates and times, and the vehicle size you need. The agent quotes the total including taxes and airport concession fees, explains the insurance options, and confirms the reservation. Most rental reservations are paid at the counter, not at booking.
Do I need to buy the rental company's insurance?
Not necessarily. Many US personal auto policies extend to rental cars, and many credit cards provide secondary — sometimes primary — collision coverage when the rental is paid with that card. Check both before you travel. If you have neither, the counter waiver is worth considering. We explain the options; the decision is yours, and we do not earn more by pushing the waiver.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in the US?
Most major rental companies rent to drivers 21 and over, with a daily 'young renter' surcharge typically applying to drivers aged 21–24. That surcharge commonly runs $20–$35 per day and is charged by the rental company, not by us. A few locations and vehicle classes require the driver to be 25.
Can I pick up in one city and drop off in another?
Yes, this is a one-way rental. It is widely available but usually carries a drop-off fee that varies enormously by route — sometimes modest, sometimes several hundred dollars. The agent will quote the specific fee for your route before you commit.
What do I need to bring to the rental counter?
A valid driver's license in the main driver's name, a credit card in that same name, and for international renters a passport plus — depending on the company and state — an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Debit cards are accepted by some companies but often trigger a credit check and a larger hold.
Is unlimited mileage included?
On most standard US rentals from major airport locations, yes. Exceptions cluster around specialty vehicles, some local neighborhood branches, and certain one-way rentals. The agent will confirm the mileage terms for your specific booking.
Can I add a second driver?
Yes. Additional drivers must be present at the counter with their own license. Many companies charge a daily additional-driver fee, though a spouse or domestic partner is exempt in several US states and under some corporate rate agreements.
What happens if I return the car late?
Rental companies typically allow a grace period of around 29 minutes, after which they may charge an hourly rate, and past a certain point a full extra day. If you know you will be late, call the rental location directly — extending in advance is almost always cheaper than returning late unannounced.
