Package or book it separately? An honest breakdown

The protection argument for packages

Beyond price, a package means one supplier is responsible for the whole trip. If your flight is cancelled, the package operator rebooks you and holds the resort — rather than you negotiating separately with an airline that does not know or care that you have a prepaid hotel waiting. On complex or high-value trips this coordination is often worth more than a modest price difference.

Reading an all-inclusive resort honestly

'All-inclusive' is a marketing term, not a defined standard. Two resorts on the same beach can mean very different things by it. Ask the agent these questions about the specific property.

  • Which restaurants need reservations, and how far ahead?
  • Are premium spirits included or only house brands?
  • Is room service included or charged per order?
  • Are motorized watersports in, or extra?
  • Is wifi included in rooms as well as public areas?
  • Are gratuities included or expected on top?
The single most useful question: "What will we realistically spend on site during a week here?" On a genuinely comprehensive all-inclusive the answer is close to nothing beyond excursions. On a weaker one it can be several hundred dollars. Your agent has that answer property by property.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in a vacation package?

At minimum, flights and accommodation booked together as one itinerary. Most packages we arrange also include airport transfers; many add activities, tours or an all-inclusive meal plan. The agent lists every inclusion explicitly before you pay, so you know exactly what is covered and what will be paid locally.

Are vacation packages cheaper than booking separately?

Frequently, yes — suppliers give package rates that are not available on standalone bookings, particularly on flight-plus-resort combinations to Mexico and the Caribbean. But not always. We price both ways and tell you which is genuinely cheaper for your specific trip, including the value of the protections a package provides.

What does all-inclusive actually cover?

Typically your room, all meals, snacks, most drinks including alcohol, non-motorized watersports, and resort entertainment. Usually excluded: premium spirits and wines, spa treatments, motorized watersports, off-site excursions, and sometimes a la carte specialty restaurants that require reservations. Standards vary widely between resorts — the agent will map the specific property's inclusions.

Can you build a custom itinerary instead of a fixed package?

Yes, and this is where a phone agent earns their keep. Multi-city Europe, a Japan itinerary with rail passes, a safari with internal flights, an India trip visiting several cities — these do not exist as off-the-shelf packages. Describe what you want and we build it. Call 1-888-620-4018.

How far ahead should I book a vacation package?

Four to eight months for peak periods such as spring break, summer and Christmas — especially for family rooms and all-inclusive resorts, which sell out first. Two to four months is usually sufficient for shoulder season. Last-minute package deals exist but limit your choice of property and room category.

Do I need travel insurance for a package holiday?

It is not mandatory, but it is worth serious consideration on a package because you have more prepaid, non-refundable money at risk than on a simple flight. Consider it especially if you are travelling with children, have any medical conditions, are booking during hurricane season, or the trip represents a significant expense. We can quote it; the choice is entirely yours.

Can you arrange honeymoon and anniversary packages?

Yes. We book honeymoon and anniversary travel regularly and will note the occasion with the resort — many offer complimentary room upgrades, a bottle of sparkling wine or a special dinner when told in advance. These are courtesies from the property, not guarantees we can promise on their behalf.

What if a hurricane or bad weather affects my trip?

Package suppliers and resorts have published policies for named storms, which typically allow rebooking when a hurricane warning is issued for your destination. Coverage varies significantly by supplier and by whether you bought travel insurance before the storm was named. We will explain your specific supplier's policy at booking, in writing.
