How to cancel a flight within 24 hours — and who actually has to refund you
The 24-hour rule is real, but it is an airline rule. If you booked through a travel agency, the legal picture is different. This guide states both clearly, then tells you exactly what to do.
- Independent agency — no airline ownership
- Fees quoted before payment
- Agents available 24/7
- Serving travelers across all 50 states
The US Department of Transportation 24-hour rule requires airlines — not travel agencies — to let you cancel most tickets booked at least seven days before departure and receive a full refund, or to hold the fare unpaid for 24 hours. If you booked through Fareobuzz, call 1-888-620-4018 immediately. Fareobuzz honors an equivalent 24-hour refund window on eligible flights and will refund its own service fee inside that window.
What the DOT 24-hour rule actually says
The US Department of Transportation requires airlines, for tickets purchased at least seven days before a flight’s scheduled departure, to do one of two things:
- Allow you to cancel within 24 hours of booking and receive a full refund without penalty, or
- Allow you to hold the reservation at the quoted price for 24 hours without paying.
Airlines are not required to offer both. They are also not required to let you change the ticket for free inside that window. The legal right is a refund or a hold — not a free date change.
Primary source: the DOT consumer page on aviation refunds. Read the section “Can I cancel a ticket reservation or purchase within 24 hours of booking?” Also see DOT’s Buying a Ticket page, which states the 24-hour refund/hold duty does not apply to tickets booked through travel agents — agencies may still offer an equivalent policy.
Gotcha: If you booked six days (or fewer) before departure, the federal 24-hour rule does not apply. Same-week travel is usually a different fare family with different rights.
What changes when you booked through a travel agency
DOT’s own FAQ is explicit: the 24-hour refund/reservation requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party agents. Those agents are free to offer the same or similar service. They are not federally required to.
That is why “I have 24 hours, right?” is the wrong first question if you did not buy from the airline. The right first questions are:
- Who is the merchant of record on my card charge?
- What does this agency’s 24-hour policy actually say, in writing?
- Is the ticket already issued in the airline’s system (record locator)?
Fareobuzz policy (agency, not federal law): on eligible flights touching the United States, booked at least seven days before departure, Fareobuzz will cancel within 24 hours of ticketing for a full refund of the airline fare and will refund its own service fee. Call 1-888-620-4018 — do not email if the clock is running.

How to cancel in the next hour
| If you booked with… | Who to call | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| The airline directly | The airline’s reservations number on your confirmation | Record locator, names as ticketed, last four of the card |
| Fareobuzz | 1-888-620-4018 (24/7) | Fareobuzz confirmation, airline record locator if you have it, traveler names |
| Another OTA | That OTA first — the airline often cannot refund a third-party ticket | OTA itinerary number. Ask whether their 24-hour policy matches the airline’s. |
After a Fareobuzz cancellation, you should receive written confirmation that the airline ticket was voided or refunded, plus a separate line for the agency fee. If the ticket was issued, verify on the airline’s website that the record locator no longer shows as ticketed. That is the definitive check.
After 24 hours: what you can still do
- Basic economy / non-refundable: the airline fare is usually lost. You may still have residual value as a credit, minus an airline cancel fee. Fareobuzz’s $50 handling fee applies outside the 24-hour window.
- Refundable fare: still refundable per the fare rules, minus any airline fee. Call before you assume it is “too late.”
- Airline cancelled or significantly changed the flight: different law. Significant change / cancellation by the carrier can entitle you to a refund to the original payment method even on a non-refundable ticket. See the same DOT refunds page.
- You need a different date, not a refund: that is a change, not a 24-hour cancel. Read how to change a flight booked with an agency.
If you are not sure which bucket you are in, call. A two-minute read-back of the fare rules is cheaper than guessing wrong.
Questions
Does the DOT 24-hour cancellation rule apply if I booked through a travel agency?
No. The US Department of Transportation states that the 24-hour refund-or-hold requirement applies to airlines, not to tickets booked through travel agents or online travel agencies. Agencies may still offer an equivalent policy. Fareobuzz honors a 24-hour full-refund window on eligible US-touching flights booked at least seven days before departure, and waives its own handling fee inside that window.
What are the two conditions for the airline 24-hour rule?
The flight must be purchased at least seven days before scheduled departure, and you must cancel within 24 hours of booking. The airline must then either refund you in full or have offered a 24-hour hold instead of taking payment.
Does the 24-hour rule let me change dates for free?
No. It covers cancellation for a refund, not a free change to a different flight. Inside the window, the clean path is usually: cancel for a refund, then book the trip you actually want as a new reservation.
How do I cancel a Fareobuzz booking today?
Call 1-888-620-4018 with your confirmation number. Do not wait on email if you are inside a 24-hour window — the clock is running.
Will I get the Fareobuzz service fee back?
On eligible bookings cancelled inside Fareobuzz’s 24-hour window, yes — the service fee is refunded in full. Outside that window, Fareobuzz service fees are non-refundable because they cover work already performed. Airline fare refunds still follow the airline’s fare rules.
