Multi-city flights: when one itinerary beats two cheap tickets
Open-jaw and multi-city trips are how real travel works — and how people accidentally strand themselves. Here is the difference between one protected ticket and a pile of one-ways.
- Independent agency — no airline ownership
- Fees quoted before payment
- Agents available 24/7
- Serving travelers across all 50 states
A multi-city or open-jaw ticket is one reservation that visits more than two airports — for example, Chicago–London–Rome–Chicago, or into Paris and home from Lisbon. It is usually safer than stacking separate one-ways because missed connections are protected. Call Fareobuzz at 1-888-620-4018 with your city sequence; the service fee is the normal flight fee, not a surcharge for complexity.
Open-jaw vs multi-city vs separate tickets
| Type | What it is | Protection |
|---|---|---|
| Round-trip | A–B–A | One ticket |
| Open-jaw | A–B, then C–A (you make your own way B→C) | One ticket on the flights |
| Multi-city | A–B–C–A or longer, all on the ticket | One ticket if issued together |
| Separate one-ways | Each flight is its own contract | None between them |
Search boxes default to round-trip. That is why people overpay for a return they will not use, or under-protect a European rail segment by buying two cheap one-ways on different airlines.
When one ticket wins
- You land in one city and depart from another (the classic Europe or India family trip).
- You need a stopover longer than a connection (a weekend in Istanbul or Doha that is on the ticket).
- You are combining a vacation package with extra cities.
- A wedding party or family is splitting across two return airports — sometimes still one group-aware construction; see group travel if you are 10+.
When two one-ways win: ultra-low-cost carriers that do not interline, or a domestic hop the long-haul airline prices poorly. An agent should show you the protected total and the cheaper-unprotected total and let you choose with eyes open.
The unprotected-ticket failure mode
You buy JFK–LHR on Airline A and FCO–JFK on Airline B three weeks later. Airline A lands late. You miss Airline B. Airline B treats you as a no-show, may cancel remaining coupons, and sells you a walk-up fare. That is the failure mode. Holiday weeks make it worse.
Minimum connection times on one ticket are the airline’s problem. Self-transfer connections are yours — including visa-to-exit-and-recheck, which can require a transit or visitor visa.
How to book it
Write the trip as a list, not a paragraph: ORD 12 Oct → LHR; 19 Oct LHR → FCO; 26 Oct FCO → ORD. Two adults. Economy. One checked bag each. Then call 1-888-620-4018.
Start on the flights page if you want to search first; phone is still the right tool once the routing has more than two cities.
Questions
What is an open-jaw flight?
You fly into one city and return from another on a single round-trip-style ticket — for example, New York to Rome, flying home from Barcelona. The ground segment in between is yours.
Why not just buy two one-way tickets?
Sometimes two one-ways win on price. The risk is protection: if the first airline delays you and you miss the second, the second airline owes you nothing. On one ticket, misconnects are the ticketing airline’s problem.
Can Fareobuzz book multi-city by phone?
Yes. Call 1-888-620-4018 with the city sequence and dates. This is one of the main reasons to use an agent instead of a single-box search.
